Does Technology Have a Place in Kindergarten Classrooms?


Support is given through the Ministry of Ontario’s (OME) (2016) Kindergarten Program to actively engage children with technology in our kindergarten classrooms.  Pedagogical principles of inquiry and play-based learning are strengthened when educators incorporate technology applications as a choice for children to communicate, explain and extend their learning. Pedagogical documentation is a way for educators to capture a child’s learning story and share it with the child and their family and supports frequent, formative assessments, which are critical for the success of today’s learner.  Technology is a natural fit for opportunities given to children that support the Problem-solving and Innovating and Math and Literacy foundations found within the Kindergarten Program (OME, 2016). Many applications are available to educators where children’s learning can be recorded and securely shared with parents. Applications that allow children to organize and document their thinking, as well as ones that allow for exploration and inquiry are given in the infographic below:
